Turks and Caicos visit

Si and I are in the Turks for ten days to see my parents new place (they moved here a few years ago). Lovely time! It's less developed than the Caymans but absolutely beautiful, with a variety of beaches and lots of canals for great kayaking.

As normal for our family, we work every day until 1pm and play in the afternoon. Current projects are putting in an apartment downstairs - cutting the granite countertops and finishing the kitchen cabinetry- as well as landscaping a garden (dig serious holes move tons of dirt landscaping, not the pretty stuff yet). Getting dirty and having fun.

Went fishing one afternoon and Tye caught a massive Wahoo. Fish for dinner anyone? If you don't know Tiny, he's a big boy ... to scale this is a big fish!



Every year my parents recognize one or two employees from Leatherman South Africa for their work by taking them on holiday somewhere then going to the biggest show of the year in the boy toy industry - the Shot Show. This year it's their "I can take a block of brick and make it cut steel in under a minute" technician. Arthur joined us today from South Africa and is just amazing. First time out of the country, first time on a boat, first time with jet lag and he doesn't swim. Poor guy had a full-full day of kayaking and boating to a lovely island and even SCUBA (seabreath) diving with Tye and dad holding both arms and moving him around. More than a day traveling. No nap. Floating on the ocean in a flimsy kayak. Fully submerged breathing from a tube. What a star.

I'm also jealous he had such a super first dive. We came on a wreck that was just COVERED in fish. You know those schools in national geographic magazines with a million fish? I couldn't see for minutes but for the fish parting around my face and arms as I swam, and a few times in clearings face to face with 4-5 foot barracuda. All this in just 15 feet of water. Amazing. Anyways, Arthur got right in the middle of it no problem. What a great start.

Caught two Conch on the way home to make conch-calamari-type thing. Here's Tiny and Arthur beating the daylight out of it (tenderizing). Delicious in shake-'n-bake. Less than two hours from catch to table.



Si and I are laughing at what Arthur's impressions of America will be. Next week he goes to Orlando which is intense anyways (Disney, loud, big roads) and moreover to the Shot Show (outdoor gaming, guns and hunting show that dad goes to every year to get ideas for new products). The show takes up two convention centers. Besides the obvious craziness of that many people, half the stalls he sees are guns and military or full camo hunting guys. What an experience. Not quite San Francisco!
