24 hour kitchen reno, one month in

So... I'm cheap, disorganized and I don't like extended reno periods.  Our house isn't worth a big investment (many of them are being torn down on our street to build rediculously expensive mcmansions), yet our kitchen wasn't functional.  So, here's our $5k kitchen reno.

Dad came over and we did a 24 hour reno.  A sunny afternoon/boat expedition extended it to the next morning, but basically we kept on schedule.  The idea was to do the big intimidating, disruptive parts all at once, then we can function, and fill in the pretty, or easier-to-do-in-an-hour stuff later.

Here we are in pictures.

An ugly angle to reach - Riley to the rescue.  I couldn't get to two screws, Riley legitimately sat in the cupboard and unscrewed two robertsons.  PRIDE!

Bulkheads out, floor + subfloor out down to original 1960s tile (level with the rest of the floor - we plan to put new laminate over the whole thing).  We left in the original sink until the counters were ready (minimize plumbing) and just piecemealed other countertop from the original stuff until the new (fancy quartz) counters came in.  The base cabinets were just temporarily in place (not aligned perfectly, just quickly) until the kitchen base came out.

Once we were ready for the new counters, the plumbing was a pain just getting everything to line up (as expected) but it was nice n quick to get the cabinets "permanently" in and lined up.  The ikea system really is impressive in its simplicity.

Some of the ikea cabinets in.  The idea was to put in the boxes, and get the doors/finishes in later. Right after this picture, we started filling up the cabinets.  We still had to move the oven to the gap on the left, but had to first wire in the junction box to extend the 220V to the far side.  We moved the hood fan electrical simply just by pulling it out in the roof and making a new hole in its new spot.

Now, here's where we are:

New counters in, drywall fixes in.  

All cabinet interiors in, except two sets of drawers, and some cabinet fronts that I'm now waiting for the Ikea AS IS to have in stock.  This picture is a few weeks ago, we now have some more doors on, and all the shelves in.  

So far, $3.2k all in.  Still have some big ticket items (floors) and finishing.

Still to do:

Track down some doors in Ikea "as it", or bite the bullet and buy full-price.

Install under-counter lighting on the stretch by the fridge, reinstall the ceiling light.

New floors flowing through the kitchen and the whole top floor (we are getting too old, will likely contract this out).  

Finish moulding on top and beside the cabinets, to the floor.

Handles

Paint.  

Buy chairs for the island.

This will all happen on random "we have energy, its raining" days, and fortunately this is all finishing stuff, vs. functional.  Let's see if we can get to a state of "done" by Christmas 2015?  Last years reno took a whole year to paint:)
